Captain Harvey has years of hands-on experience teaching kids how to fish — both as a professional fishing captain and as a dad and grandfather. He specializes in safe, patient, and fun Ocean Isle Beach Kids Fishing Charters designed to introduce children to saltwater fishing in a calm, controlled environment.
All kids fishing charters take place in the calm, protected waters of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and nearby backwaters around Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, and Sunset Beach. There are no offshore runs or rough seas on these trips.
The 2-hour kids fishing charter is designed specifically for children ages 4–12. These trips are structured to hold their attention, limit sun exposure, and provide a fun introduction to saltwater fishing.
Everything is included — just show up and fish. Captain Harvey provides all bait, tackle, fishing licenses, and hands-on instruction, keeping the focus on steady action, learning, and having fun.
A Fishing Trip Designed Around the Kids
The goal of the Kids Fishing Charter isn't simply to catch fish—it's to give children the best fishing experience possible. These trips are designed specifically for children ages 4–12, allowing Captain Harvey to focus his attention on teaching, encouraging, and helping young anglers build confidence on the water.
Adults are welcome to fish alongside the children, but this trip is built around the kids. Captain Harvey's instruction and assistance will always go to the children first, whether they need help casting, baiting a hook, untangling a line, or reeling in a fish.
We're not trying to catch trophy fish on this particular trip. The goal is to help kids learn to fish, enjoy the outdoors, and have a memorable excursion during their family vacation. If you want to target larger fish, please book my Inshore Fishing Charter, Nearshore Fishing Charter, Shark Fishing Charter, or Captain's Choice Fishing Charter instead.
Captain's Note:
This trip is designed specifically for children ages 4–12. Adults are welcome to fish, but the kids come first and will receive Captain Harvey's primary instruction and assistance.
Kids Fishing Charters are also 100% catch and release. The focus is on helping children learn, enjoy the outdoors, build confidence, and create lasting memories on the water.
What Will We Catch on a Kids Fishing Charter?
Kids fishing charters focus on species that are common, cooperative, and fun to catch in the calm inshore waters around Ocean Isle Beach. Depending on the season and conditions, young anglers commonly catch pinfish, croaker, pufferfish, sheepshead, black drum, flounder, and even redfish.
The goal is steady action and hands-on fishing—not trophy hunting. Captain Harvey targets productive areas where kids can feel bites, stay engaged, learn new skills, and safely reel in fish on their own or with a little help.
Every trip is a little different, but families can expect real fishing, real catches, and plenty of opportunities for kids to learn, participate, and have fun on the water. Adults may fish too, but the children's experience always comes first.
Kids Fishing Charters are 100% catch and release. The focus is on learning, building confidence, and creating lasting memories. Every fish is carefully released so it can be caught again another day. If your child is comfortable holding their catch, they'll have the opportunity to hold it for a photo before personally releasing it back into the water.
One of the Best Things to Do in Ocean Isle Beach with Kids
If you're looking for things to do in Ocean Isle Beach with kids, a short inshore fishing charter offers a fun, hands-on experience that gets children off screens and out on the water. These trips are calm, safe, and specifically designed for younger anglers.
Unlike crowded attractions or long offshore trips, Kids Fishing Charters focus on steady action, simple instruction, and an enjoyable pace that keeps children engaged without overwhelming them. Adults are welcome to fish, encourage the children, help when needed, and share in the excitement, but the kids remain the focus of the trip.
Whether you're visiting Ocean Isle Beach for a family vacation or looking for a unique local activity, a Kids Fishing Charter is a memorable way to help children learn to fish, enjoy the outdoors, and create lasting family memories together on the water.

FAQ - Ocean Isle Beach Kids Fishing Charter
Here are some of the most common questions I get about my Kids Fishing Charters in Ocean Isle Beach.
What species of fish will we catch?
On Kids Fishing Charters, the goal is simple: keep the action steady and the excitement high. Rather than targeting one specific species, I focus on catching numbers to keep kids engaged and having fun.
We most commonly catch sea bass, whiting, croakers, and puffer fish, but it's not uncommon to also hook into inshore gamefish like redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, and sheepshead.
What ages do you accept on your Kids Fishing Charters?
My Kids Fishing Charters are designed specifically for children ages 4–12. Around 3 to 4 years old is usually the youngest I recommend. Younger children are welcome to come along, but at that age they're typically riding and watching more than actively fishing.
If your children are 13 or older, I'd recommend booking an Inshore Fishing Charter, Nearshore Fishing Charter, or Shark Fishing Charter instead. Those trips are better suited for older anglers and groups interested in targeting larger fish.
Can adults fish on the Kids Fishing Charter?
Yes. Adults are welcome to fish alongside the children, but this trip is designed specifically for kids ages 4–12. The children always come first and will receive my primary instruction and assistance throughout the trip.
If everyone in your group wants equal fishing time and instruction, or you're hoping to target larger fish, I'd recommend booking my 4-Hour Inshore Fishing Charter instead.
How long are Kids Fishing Charters?
My Kids Fishing Charters are 2 hours long, which is the perfect amount of time for keeping kids engaged without wearing them out or losing their attention. The shorter trip limits sun exposure while still providing plenty of time for children to learn, catch fish, and enjoy being on the water.
Where will we fish on our Kids Fishing Charter?
Safety always comes first, especially on Kids Fishing Charters. We fish calm, protected saltwater around Ocean Isle Beach, including the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), Shallotte River, Calabash River, nearby backwaters, and saltwater marshes. These protected waters provide the ideal setting for young anglers.
Are life jackets provided?
Absolutely. Life jackets are provided for everyone onboard and are required for anyone under 13 years old. For safety and compliance, all children must wear the USCG-approved life jackets that I provide, as charter regulations require specific types of PFDs.
How many people can come on a Kids Fishing Charter?
A maximum of four guests may come on the trip. Kids Fishing Charters are designed for small family groups, allowing Captain Harvey to give each child plenty of hands-on instruction and personal attention. Adults count toward the four-person maximum and are welcome to fish, but the children remain the focus of the trip.
Do we keep or release the fish we catch?
Kids Fishing Charters are 100% catch and release. The focus is on learning, building confidence, enjoying the outdoors, and creating lasting memories—not bringing home fish. Every fish is carefully released so it can be caught again another day. If your child is comfortable holding their catch, they'll have the opportunity to hold it for a photo before personally releasing it.
Is this a trophy fishing trip?
No. We're not trying to catch Moby Dick on this trip. The goal is to keep kids involved, help them learn the basics of fishing, and give them a fun and memorable experience during their family vacation. We focus more on steady action and participation than targeting the biggest fish in the area.
Do I need a fishing license for a Kids Fishing Charter?
No. When you fish with me, everyone onboard is covered under my North Carolina and South Carolina charter fishing licenses. There's nothing extra to purchase—just show up ready to fish.
What should I bring for my Kids Fishing Charter?
Please bring sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, drinks, and a hat for your kids. Light layers are also a good idea depending on the weather. A cooler isn't required (I have one onboard with ice for your use), but if you choose to bring one, a small soft-sided cooler works best on the boat.
I provide all required safety gear, fishing licenses, fishing gear, bait / tackle, and a cooler stocked with ice and bottled water.
What happens if the weather's bad?
Safety always comes first, especially on Kids Fishing Charters. I monitor marine forecasts, radar, and local conditions daily, but weather decisions can only be made the day of your trip when the most accurate information is available. We can safely fish through light rain or passing showers when conditions allow, but I will never take families out in weather that's unsafe or simply uncomfortable—especially with kids onboard.
If I have to cancel your trip due to weather, you will always receive a 100% refund. I'll also do everything I can to help reschedule while you're in town, because I know how much kids look forward to their day on the boat. My goal is to keep your vacation safe, fun, and stress-free.
Can we book a Kids Fishing Charter in Holden Beach or Sunset Beach?
Absolutely. A lot of my Kids Fishing Charters take place in the calm backwaters of Holden Beach and Sunset Beach because those areas are perfect for younger anglers.
If your vacation rental is on either island, I can meet you at a nearby dock so you spend more time fishing and less time riding.
You can see how these trips work on my charters near Holden Beach and Sunset Beach fishing trips pages.
