Shark fishing off Ocean Isle Beach, NC offers everything from calm, family-friendly action to hard-fought offshore battles with trophy sharks. I offer 4-, 6-, and 8-hour shark fishing charters so you can choose the trip length that best matches your experience level, comfort, and goals on the water.
4-hour shark fishing charters are my most versatile option and may include both inshore and nearshore fishing depending on conditions. These trips are ideal for families, first-time shark anglers, and anyone looking for fast action without committing to a long day.
For anglers looking for bigger fish and more time on the water, my 6-hour offshore shark fishing charters offer a serious opportunity to battle large sharks without the commitment of a full-day trip.
The 8-hour offshore shark fishing charter is designed for true trophy hunters who want maximum range, time, and the best shot at the biggest sharks of the season.

Safety & Conservation
Salty Dawg Fishing Charters strictly adheres to 100% catch-and-release on all shark fishing charters. We use medium and medium-heavy gear to shorten the fight, and circle hooks to reduce injuries to the sharks. We keep larger sharks in the water for a healthy swim-off, but still have ample opportunity for great photos. Catch-and-release shark fishing is exciting, safe, and the right thing for the fishery.

FAQ for Our Shark Fishing Charters
Here are some of the most common questions I get about shark fishing charters in Ocean Isle Beach.
What species of sharks will we catch on our fishing charter?
We predominantly catch Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks and Hammerhead Sharks, but we also catch: Blacktip Sharks, Bonnethead Sharks, Bull Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Sandbar Sharks, Spiny Dogfish, and Tiger Sharks.
For more info on the sharks we may encounter in Ocean Isle Beach, you can read this Guide to Sharks in NC.
What’s the best time of year for shark fishing in North Carolina?
The prime shark fishing season runs from late May through October, when water temps are in the 70s and baitfish schools are thick along the beaches. Summer offers steady action, while late summer into early fall often brings bigger sharks closer to shore.
Are shark fishing trips safe for families and kids?
Absolutely. Safety is always my top priority. We use heavy gear, proper de-hooking tools, and release sharks carefully alongside the boat. Families with kids often love these trips because they’re exciting, hands-on, and completely safe under my guidance.
Do we keep or release the sharks we catch?
All of our sharks are released to protect the fishery for future generations. We practice catch-and-release using circle hooks, heavy leaders, and quick handling to ensure the shark swims off strong. I’ll help you get great photos before release.
What kind of gear do we use for shark fishing?
We use medium to heavy-duty rods with 80 lb braid, and 400 lb monofilament leaders (and sometimes steel leaders), and large circle hooks (8/0 to 12/0). Bait usually includes fresh-cut mullet, menhaden, or bluefish. Everything’s provided!
How far offshore do shark trips go?
Most shark fishing trips stay within a few miles of the beach or around local inlets like Little River Inlet and Shallotte Inlet, but we do offer trips up to 20 miles offshore. We fish near natural sandbars, reefs, wrecks, tide lines, and bait pods where sharks feed actively.
Do I need a fishing license for a shark charter?
Not if you’re fishing with me, as your fishing license is covered under my charter fishing license from NCDMF (North Carolina) and SCDNR (South Carolina), so you’re fully legal and ready to fish. Just show up, and I’ll take care of the rest.
What should I bring for a shark fishing charter?
Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, drinks, snacks, and a hat. Everything else, including rods, reels, tackle, bait, and ice is provided.
What happens if the weather’s bad?
Safety comes first. If I see unsafe weather conditions, I’ll reach out to reschedule or refund your trip. You will always receive a 100% refund if I have to cancel your trip due to bad weather. I monitor local and sea conditions daily, so I’ll make the best call for your trip.
Do you offer shark fishing charters in Holden Beach and Sunset Beach, NC?
Yes — I run shark fishing charters along the beaches and near the inlets around both Holden Beach and Sunset Beach. Depending on the conditions and the bite, we may fish near the beachfront, around bait pods and tide lines, or closer to inlet areas where sharks naturally patrol and feed. Likewise, depending on the season and conditions, we may also fish the nearby reefs and shipwrecks for trophy shark fishing opportunities.
If you’re staying in Holden Beach or Sunset Beach, we can often meet at a nearby dock so you spend less time riding and more time fishing. Once booked, we'll discuss the best launch point for your shark fishing charter.
